Graphic Renderers: Which is The Best for You?

You might be thinking about what is the actual utility of these components when you are going to play a game, specifically Blokoto in our case. Some questions can be made about them, especially by ordinary players that have practically no idea when trying to find out which one of those can satisfy their needings.

However, you’re going to finally understand the difference about the advantages, qualities and much more about the graphic renderers available on the game!

Where You Can Find Them

Click on the gear button as you see here:

Then you can finally choose one of them

  • DirectX 12
  • Vulkan
  • OpenGL 3.3

After making your choice, simply click on the arrow button above to come back, then launch the game, which will feature the rendering according to what you’ve chosen previously.

What They Can Offer to You

Depending on the chosen renderer, you can notice some performance aspects that may satisfy what you are looking for. Despite that, you might be confused about how you are going to make this decision, so there is a little guide about each one of the three graphic renderers available in Blokoto:

DirectX 12

It’s a complex renderer developed by Microsoft, and is known by providing a great control over the GPU & CPU of your computer, also working well in modern games. It is only available for Windows and it is the default, recommended driver for the system.

Vulkan

To summarize in less words, it acts practically the same as DirectX 12 does, but the main advantage behind it is that Vulkan is a multi platform renderer, which means that it was developed to work regardless the OS you’re currently using, so we highly recommend it both for Windows and Linux/MacOS users if your GPU supports it well.

OpenGL

The OpenGL renderer differentiates from the latter two, since it has been made to be way less complex to perform, but due to its age and the fact that it’s an older renderer, the quality and results can be less satisfactory than the others, but it’s nothing that actually prevents its normal use.

It has been implemented in Blokoto to support older systems that need it to run the game, acting as a compatibility mode for users that aren’t able to use another renderer, but that’s not a guarantee that his graphics are going to satisfy you. You must expect less detailed parts and some odd differences on the rendering of your game, however, it may be faster than Vulkan or DirectX due to the removed graphical features.

Current General Recommendation

According to some tests that have been made by our team, and some confirmations, it’s recommended to use the Vulkan graphic renderer at this moment, since DirectX 12 and OpenGL 3.3 presented some issues for users that attempted to play with them during the Alpha 1.3.0, causing to simply freeze their game and finally close it suddenly.

We are currently trying to fix it as fast as we can to provide the players some guarantee around their chances of not being disturbed by issues like this anymore.
